55years old at the start
Louis Chiron started the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix aged 55 years and 292 days, the oldest driver in a championship race, and finished sixth.
Chiron grew up in Monaco, where his father worked at the Hôtel de Paris and Louis worked there as a bellboy. In the same 1955 race, Alberto Ascari's Lancia went through the barriers into the harbour and he had to swim out. Monaco later put up a statue of Chiron and named the first chicane of the Swimming Pool section after him.
